We all know about brain freezes, but some of us get tooth “freezes” too. This reaction is caused by sensitive teeth. Sensitive teeth, can be affected by both cold, or hot liquids and foods. 45M Americans are affected by sensitive teeth, 10M chronically.

Sensitive teeth is a fairly common condition, so there is no reason for immediate alarm, however you should be aware of it’s possible causes. Often sensitive teeth are caused by a receding gum line. This can be caused by brushing too hard and/or a hard bristle tooth brush. It has been said that 2 out of 3 Americans brush their teeth too hard. The proper brushing procedure is to brush throughly, but gently. Living with sensitive teeth can be moderated by proper brushing technique, monitoring the temperature of your food, and by using a tooth paste formulated for sensitive teeth, such as Sensodyne, which is but one of many brands on the market.

However, extremely sensitive teeth maybe the sign of something more serious, such as a cracked tooth, or gum disease. If you think you have any possibility of either, you should visit a general dentist, or periodontist right away.
